My Halloween costume for 2012: Matt Romney!

Published by Todd Herman on October 31st, 2012 - in SEO

My fellow Americans, I’d like to introduce my latest Halloween costume: Matt Romney!

My five-point plan for the Mitt Romney Halloween costume went like this:

  1. Start with a suit and tie.
  2. Put a little silver in my sideburns. My wife used some silver and white eye shadow.
  3. Swoosh the hair up a little bit and lock it in with hairspray.
  4. Take off the glasses, and
  5. Add a flag. Boom!

This was a fun, easy, comfortable costume. I practiced a few of Mitt Romney’s catchphrases and I think people really enjoyed seeing “Matt Romney” around the Googleplex.

My wife and I are also trying something new for Halloween. I remember as a kid when I got a full-size candy bar for Halloween–it blew me away! I still remember those neighbors as really cool. Recently someone reminded me of that experience.

So this year, the first couple dozen kids who stop by our house are in for a nice treat:

Happy Halloween, everyone! You might also enjoy seeing some of my other Halloween costumes.

GOOG Stock & Profits Drop: Webmasters: Panda & Penguin Related?

Published by Todd Herman on October 19th, 2012 - in SEO

I am sure virtually all of you saw the news that Google’s stock price (GOOG) dropped tremendously yesterday after the earnings release was leaked and it showed a 20% drop in profits.

What is typical webmaster reaction to Google earnings calls? The reaction of those webmasters who do not own stock, that is. The reaction of those webmasters who were hit by a recent Google update, like Penguin or Panda? Most are rejoicing.

Here is one comment from a WebmasterWorld user:

I’m loving this!

Why did Google not perform well last quarter? Webmasters will say because Google’s search results are less relevant, driving less searches and less clicks on ads. Well, the earnings release says that paid clicks were up 33%.

In any event, why do you think Google’s earnings dropped from a webmaster perspective. Go at it in the comments but please use G-rated words.

Google Sitelinks Are Time Dynamic

Published by Todd Herman on October 18th, 2012 - in SEO

Google has lots of flavors of Sitelinks but did you know that the Sitelinks change dynamically not just based on query but also based on your time filter?

For example, search for [microsoft] in Google and you will get typical Sitelinks from Microsoft site. For example, you get Dev Center, Support, Office, and so on:

But if you go to the search tools on the left and restrict the search to let’s say this past week, you get a different set of Sitelinks:

The content from these sections are more fresh, like the news center, some new announcements and I guess popular but recently updated pages.

It doesn’t seem to be perfect but it might be a useful tool for SEOs to see what “fresh” or “recent” pages Google deems to be important on your web site.
